Planning a Healthy Vacation
Preparation is the key to a healthy vacation when you have diabetes.
Vacations should be enjoyable. Or exciting. Or relaxing—everything you want them to be. But whenever you take vacation, whatever you do, and wherever you go, safety is paramount and planning is key, especially when you have type 2 diabetes.
The tips below will help remind you of some easy things you can do to ensure that you’re following your treatment plan to take good care of yourself while you’re having fun.
Visit your doctor
before vacation to see whether your diabetes is in good control. If it isn't, ask what you can do.
Ask your doctor for:
- A letter describing your testing regimen, medications, and allergies
- An extra prescription for your medicines, so you do not run out
Tip: Keep your medicines with you and not in your checked baggage
If you're going overseas,
get any needed immunizations at least 1 month before your trip.
