Seasonal Exercise
Staying fit year-round isn't hard to do
Most people associate good weather with getting outside and getting active. But there are plenty of things to do in every season.
Of course, there's always an excuse. It's really easy to say you're too busy or you have other obligations or you're not feeling up to it. But the more you make an agreement with yourself to do something physical every day, the more exercise will become a habit you don't want to break. And there are plenty of good reasons to get moving.
When you're in good shape, you have the strength, flexibility, and endurance needed for your daily activities. Being physically active helps you feel better physically and mentally. When you have diabetes, it's critical that you stay active. And the more you move, the more calories you burn, so you can lose weight while you're walking, dancing, or vacuuming the stairs.
If you haven't been active for a while, be sure to see your health care provider and get clearance to start an exercise program. Then, start slowly. Just 5 to 10 minutes a day at the beginning is a good way to go, repeated several times a day. Your goal is 30 minutes a day of some activity.
Each time of year offers a wealth of possibilities, from swimming in summer, to yoga in winter, to gardening in spring and fall. Of course, walking is something you can—and should—be doing every day!
