Seasonal Eating
Enjoy great diabetes-friendly meals throughout the year.
Many people find that they are influenced by the seasons when it comes to meal preparation and eating—so here are some seasonal suggestions.
Meal planning is essential every day of every month, but the foods you choose and the way you prepare them will probably vary from season to season. Most people find that they want no-fuss light meals in hot weather, warm and nourishing meals when it's chilly, and a wide range of seasonal produce whenever it is available.
According to a study by the national lab company Quest Diagnostics, the change in seasons appears to affect A1C levels. A1C levels were highest in January, February, and March, and lowest in July, August, and September. This may have something to do with holiday eating in the winter and increased activity in the summer.
It stands to reason, though, that we are more likely to eat well if we eat what's readily available at each particular time of year. You can learn to shop, cook, and prepare your meals and snacks based on the seasons.
