Give Your Skin TLC
Taking care of your skin is vital when you have type 2 diabetes
There's no doubt that winter weather or the summer sun can be tough on your skin. But dry, itchy skin is more than a cosmetic concern. Severely dry skin can crack and bleed, creating a greater chance of infection. Before you pull on a sweater, treat your skin with these tips:
- Shower in lukewarm—not hot—water for just 5 to 10 minutes.
- Moisturize. Use mild soap with moisturizer, and apply lotion after bathing.
- Use sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher if you are going to be in the sun for more than 20 minutes. Remember, snow can reflect more than 80% of the sun's damaging ultraviolet radiation.
- Choose a lip balm with an SPF of 15 to help prevent chapped lips.
- Consider purchasing a humidifier to keep the humidity in your home higher during the winter.
- Contact your doctor if your skin continues to cause you discomfort or shows signs of infection.
- Take good care of your feet—check them every day for sores or cuts.
